Had a great time with the kids! They were very engaging and loved the story "Why Is There A Raisin In My Meatloaf?" They also enjoyed the mini boxes of raisins that were handed out afterwards. What an awesome day it was!
Interested in doing a book reading at a local school. First all you will need to be comfortable with speaking to a group of people as there may not just be kids in the room but some adults as well. You have to engage the children. Have fun. Encourage dialogue or have a planned activity. Keep it short! Young kids get bored easily and have short attention spans. Talk to the Principal and the teachers at the school to get permission for the event. You will need to be flexible and work within their busy time schedules. If you are looking for some publicity maybe your local newspaper will cover the event.
The more exposure you and your book get the better your book sales will be. Good luck.

Everyones a Winner - Story Telling, Raisins, and a Draw
Sixty kids at the Fort Simpson school, Kindergarten to grade 2, that attended my book reading on November 28, 2013 definitely had a great time. A couple of the kids told me they already had my book, "Why Is There A Raisin In My Meatloaf?" To add to the fun everyone was given a mini box of Raisins to eat. The kids all loved to interact and talk about things that related to the book like, their dogs, the types of Surprises they have had, and they shared what types of things they got to help with at home in the kitchen when they assisted their Mom or Dad. Turns out the top favorite treat of these kids was Chocolate Cake, but no surprise there, lol.
I spent 45 minutes with each class, entertaining and engaging them with my fun story. At the end of each reading everyone put their names into the draw box and one lucky person won a Tori-Books T-Shirt. They loved Patches, the giraffe, Tori's Mascot. It was a great time and I look forward to going back to the school again in the New Year to read my new book entitled, The Bedtime Story.

Join the popular crowd - Be a book reader
Franzi is doing what we want all of our kids to do. She is happy and content curled up reading a good book. Franzi is apart of my program I call "Read it Enjoy it and then Pass it along". She is one of many that are enjoying my books but she also has a purpose in mind. She is taking English as a second language and uses my books to practice. She also loves cats and dogs and they are always included in my books.
Starting when your little ones are babies you should read to them every day. It is the beginning, the basics, to the fundamentals of all learning.
If books are readily available and in sight for your kids to see then they will choose to read more often. Read them a variety of books, heart-warming, comedy, fiction and non-fiction. Start a book collection by a specific Author that your child enjoys. They are never too young to start a book collection.
Give books as gifts or use for gift exchanges. You can donate your old books to organizations that will make sure children somewhere, that are less fortunate, can enjoy them. Keep your special books and someday you will be able to share those same wonderful stories with your own children.
Book #1: Why is there a raisin in my meatloaf?
`
This is a good heart-warming story and one dog lovers will enjoy. Ages 7 and under. Currently for sale.
Book#2: The bedtime story.
A juvenile fiction book for ages 7 and under. This book resonates with children. They can see themselves in the story and in turn they will share their own experiences. I love putting emotions into my books as it brings the story to life. The illustrations are wonderful. Being released in January 2014.
Book #3: I love boxes.
What child does not love boxes? This is a terrific, fun rhyming book that is sure to be read over and over again. This book will be out on the market later in 2014 as a new release. Watch for it.
Go to my website at www.Tori-Books.com for more information. You can order my books online or directly from myself.

Below are craft ideas, books and food items that you may enjoy making with your children. If you have some things you have done with your family that you don't mind sharing, please add them in the comment section for myself and my viewers to see.

The Pressure of Christmas Gift Buying
Christmas is such a wonderful time for family gatherings and gift giving. Of course the traditional meal is always looked forward to. So many parents spend a lot of money on toys in hopes of making Christmas special for their young children. Then of course they spend the rest of the year complaining about how spoiled they are and how they don't appreciate what they have and they spend hours picking up the daily mess that is left behind at bedtime.
A possible solution is to purchase more items that will engage your child's time throughout the year. Items that are entertaining and encourage family time as well and learning. These items will not over-flow the toy box and are less likely to get broken within a few days. Things like family board games, or educational online programs that use computer games to teach your kids, and for sure buy some books.
All kids want the latest toys and gadgets out there but do they really need it all at such a young age. Buy one special toy not ten. People feel pressured into buying at Christmas time and spending money that they don't have. You can still have a wonderful, fantastic Christmas, spend less, enjoy the gifts longer, have ongoing family time or game nights, just by keeping it simple.
Reading books to your child at bedtime is a good habit that will keep their interest in reading growing throughout their lives. Show them that there is an adventure to be found in every book. Get books that not only entertain and encourage your child's imagination but how about books that give them knowledge in a fun way. Books about family pets, sealife, wildlife, counting, colours, paper folding crafts, making puppets out of socks, activity books, books about trains and airplanes, and so much more...
Years later what will kids remember? Will they remember all the toys and gadgets they had or will they remember the time they spent with you during family time. My grown children, who all have children of their own now, tell me how they want their kids to be a part of some of the things they remember from when they were little that remain important to them to this day. We had very limited funds back then but I never let it interfere with Christmas. We made homemade items to hang on our tree, they all helped to make the felt ornaments and stuff them and make the popcorn string for garland. Anything they made at school and brought home was proudly hung. Christmas is for the kids so let it be about your kids and get them involved. Let them help make cookies and decorate them. Go sledding. There is so much more to Christmas than just the toys.
So what do you do about the people in your family that want to buy the kids gifts. It is actually helpful for people if you give them a list of preferred gift items to choose from. Do up a wish list. Your friends and family will appreciate it and you will not end up with stuff you don't want your kids to have.
I just did a book sale/signing and found people were happy to buy my books for their kids or grandkids as Christmas gifts for this year. When I spoke with them they also shared some of the other books they love for their families. I can tell you the most popular author's name that came up (other than mine of course) was Robert Munsch. I'm sure you have all seen some of his books.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all the best in the New Year. Happy Reading and I hope you will check-out my website for Tori-Books at: www.Tori-Books.com Kids are never too young to start a book collection.

Setting up for a book sale/signing
Be creative. Make your table stand-out. Be approachable and friendly. Smile. Have a draw for a free copy of your book. People like giveaways. Always have your business cards handy and out in view. Encourage people to take one and let them know if your website is listed on it or if it tells them where they can purchase more of your books. Good business cards will have this info.
I wrote in my books prior to the start of the sale to make it quicker and easier, so when people bought a book all I had to do was write the Child's name and sign my name. Even though it is close to Christmas don't assume people want to give the book as a Christmas gift, always ask first. If it is a Christmas gift then you can sign, Merry Christmas, if not you can sign as you like. I sign with "Smiles, Tori". Also, you should purchase pens to sign with that have acid free ink and that are smudge proof. They come in many colors. When signing the book I do not advise you to use your actual signature as somewhere down the road it will most likely end up on the internet. I sign with my nick name Tori rather than my legal name, just safer.
While selling my books and talking to people, I let them know that I have another book coming out in January and that I have an upcoming book reading happening and where. Advertise, but at the same time listen to people and ask them about what other books they enjoy and buy for their kids.
At the end of the day if you sold some books and made a few people happy then you should feel proud of yourself and your accomplishments. Keep in mind, word of mouth is often the best seller of all.

How do I do a newspaper interview?
Part of Marketing and Promotions is to do Newspaper interviews. Here is my first one below. Remember to set up a good webpage, a blog, join google +, twitter, pinterest, etc. Send out emails to let people know your new book is out and tell them where they can purchase it. I write young Children's books so I have approached elementary schools to arrange a book reading. I have also got a table at the Christmas Bazaar. More plans in the works for the New Year. At the same time I am working on book #3. It is important to keep writing. Until next time, Tori.

So you've decided to write a book. Part 3 What have I learned?
Since this was my first book writing venture, I decided to go with Self-Publishing. I researched many companies and in the end decided to go with FriesenPress. I live in Canada and this company is 100% Canadian owned and is located in Victoria, BC. The parent company, Friesens Corporation, has over 100 years experience printing including some of the Harry Potter series. I figured with taking on something this challenging I would have to start at the beginning and learn it from the ground up. What better way to do it then to Self-Publish. Little did I know the actual writing of my manuscript was going to be the easy part.
So how costly is Self-Publishing and what will they do for you? FriesenPress offers a variety of packages to clients. You make the choice that is best suited for you. These packages of course vary in price and come with different options. There are many additional options offered that individuals may choose to add onto their packages. You can spend as little as $899 or you can spend upwards of $5,000 on a package. The benefit of Self-Publishing is that you get to be involved in the whole process step-by-step. They have the professionals to advise you throughout the process, they do editing, the layout, revisions, and printing, etc. They will even coach you on Marketing and Promotion for your book. Your Account Manager will guide you through each step to help make the process as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
I have talked with other Authors who have done both Self-Publishing and Traditional Publishing. Difference...Traditional Publishers look after the costs of getting your book Published and pay you for your story, then depending on your deal with the publisher you most likely collect Royalties after that based on your book sales. Sounds great, although getting a Traditional Publisher to notice you is not an easy task. Also, just because they publish one of your books does not mean they will automatically publish the next one. It is important to note that whichever way you choose to go with the type of publishing, you will still be required to Market and Promote your book to gain the attention of prospective buyers. Finding your niche or hook to help you stand out from the crowd of other Authors is important. Interviews, articles, social media, book reading and signings is a good start to getting yourself noticed. It is an ongoing effort and can be a challenge for those that tend to be shy or withdrawn. So, whether you go with Self-Publishing or Traditional Publishing you will be responsible for the marketing and promoting your book. The more you do the more attention you will gain and hopefully the more book sales you will make.
Illustrators are your best friend if you find the right one. I swear the one I have can read my mind at times. I send a copy of my manuscript to my illustrator as it is important that she reads and understand the story for which she is illustrating. I also write a small blurb on the page where the illustration is to go, outlining what I roughly would like to see. She works her magic from there.
What did I learn with Self-Publishing?
Are you a Self-Publisher or did you get on with a Traditional Publisher? What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you.

What did I learn with Self-Publishing?
- That you should get your booked edited more than once by different book editing professionals. This is very important if you want publishers and book stores to take notice of your book.
- There is a stigma that comes with being a Self-Publisher. You have to work hard to get people to see past this and have them just love your book. Market and promote your ass off :^)
- I figured out, after the fact, that when you hire a Illustrator you can ask them to do the writing on the cover of the book as well as the drawings.
- When you are sent the electronic copies of your book for review and revisions to be made it can come as 2 attachments. One is the book cover, front and back, and the second attachment is the contents. What I did not know, nor was told, was that the cover on the contents copy, basically just the title of the book, was not just to keep track of what book this was but in fact was a Title Page that would end up in the book when published.
- I learned that you can be very specific with what you want in regards to the style of print, the colour, if certain words are to be in Italic, if you want the pages numbered or not, do you want an outline around your pages, etc. With my first book I thought they sent me a smorgasbord of options. It was a little overwhelming. Different shades of blue and different styles of font... It was a lot of work to go through everything and make the necessary changes to what I felt I wanted to see. Don't get me wrong, this was also good for me to be aware of the variety of choices that were available.
- I learned that the entire process of book publishing takes a lot of time. Your book is in Queue with many others and each step of the book publishing process can take anywhere from 2 - 6 weeks. Patience is definitely a virtue but in the end it will all be worth it when you see and hold the finished product.
Are you a Self-Publisher or did you get on with a Traditional Publisher? What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you.

So you've decided to write a book - Part 2 - Research
Part 2
While you are completing writing your book you should also make time to do some research and networking. There is a lot of information out there on the internet. Many people share their knowledge and experiences. Many businesses are offering their services. So where do you start looking?
Do you need an Illustrator? There are many online that include their portfolio's or maybe you like one who you have already found from a book you have previously read or saw in the library. Find a few you like? Contact them, describe what you are looking for and ask about their fees.
Remember, this is your book and you should be happy with the outcome. Writing, Marketing and Promoting is all apart of this new career you have decided to take on. It is time consuming and requires dedication, determination, and a love for what you do. Be sure to reach your readers in a way that is unique to you. Find your niche. Ask yourself why you want to be an author and what does success mean to you? If it's money, you maybe in the wrong business. Getting that best seller is not easy as they are far and few between. You are going to need to learn time-management.
As I continue to write this series, it will be based on myself, my books, my accumulated knowledge thus far and the choices that I have made. I welcome readers to leave me comments, suggestions, or your own personal stories.
Take care, Tori.

- you can do a general search on the internet for most topics like publishing, book tours and book signings, literary conferences, etc.
- check out websites of authors you are familiar with. See how they are doing things.
- There are a lot of Blogs you can be apart of.
- Join, mingle, and reach out to other book writers. People are always happy to share their success stories and challenges.
- Look into ways to market your book and how to promote it.
- Go to popular sites like Goodreads.
- You tube has book trailers.
- Enter writing contests.
- Have you thought about getting yourself an Agent?
- Are you planning on trying to get a Traditional Publisher or go with Self-Publishing?
- Should you join Literary Groups? There are some great ones out there. Most hold Annual Literary Conferences and offer valuable workshops.
- SCBWI
- CANSCAIP
- NorthWords NWT
- The Writers' Union of Canada
- Check for local groups in your area. This is just a drop in the bucket of what is out there.

So you've decided to write a book...that was easy??!!**##
Part 1
This is something you have always thought about doing but the time was just never right for whatever reason. Now you have the time and the drive to make this dream happen. So you sit down at your computer and start typing. Your ideas and energy flow onto the pages with ease. It's like this story has been busting to get out of you. So you type and type. You review what you have, make changes, and carry on. You're excited that you are finally doing this. Before you know it the day has flown by. Your head so full of thoughts you can hardly sleep that night. At 5 am you wake up and grab a cup of tea, put the dogs outside to pee, and then get right back to your computer and eagerly start working on your book once again. You think to yourself, "why didn't I do this before? I love what I am doing and I'm my own boss." You are off to a great start!

The Self-Publishing Stigma
Lets talk about it. For all you new self-published Authors do you find this stigma is hard to get past?
How about being able to join Literacy groups? Some tell us we can only sign up as an Associate member or Friend. The only way to be a full member is to be a published Author through a traditional publishing company.
Good news though from The Writer's Union of Canada. In a unanimous vote, TWUC members approved a resolution to admit professional, self-published authors to the Union. This is a big step in the future of self-published writers.
"The resolution allows for self-published books as professional credit toward membership, as long as three important criteria are met. Self-published books presented by authors applying to join the Union must contain an International Standard Book Number (ISBN), must demonstrate commercial intent, and must be peer reviewed before being forwarded to the membership committee of the Union for approval based on existing criteria." Hi I'm Patches...
I am excited to tell you all that my book has already found many happy homes to go to in Canada, United States, Germany, Japan, Belize, and Barbados.
Christmas is not all that far away and books for children are a great gift that they do not tire of. It also enriches family time as you sit and read with your child, grandchild, niece or nephew. It is a great gift basket item; something a mom-to-be might appreciate, or simply a nice treat to add this heartwarming story to your child's book collection.
About the book:
It all started when Daddy got Lily a special surprise. Everyone loves surprises, right? So when Lily makes her father a surprise birthday supper it turns out to be more of surprise then what she had expected.
Plump, juicy, sweet raisins are usually in cookies, muffins and tarts but in meatloaf?
How are Daddy's and Lily's surprises connected? You will have to read my book to find out. I think you will be—surprised.

Don't forget - you can enter to win a FREE copy of my book by looking for this sign on my Website and entering the draw. Contest ends December 1st, 2013. Good luck everyone!

June 20 - Off to Switzerland - Our last tour
We caught our very nice comfy air conditioned tour bus at 7:15 am. Gotta love the Zebra painted bus. Our Stefan Tours bus driver/tour guide was dressed up in Traditional Bavarian clothes. We were the only English speaking people on board but our guide did a great job of speaking in two languages making sure we were never left out of conversations. Our bus ride took us from Oberstaufen, Germany over the boarder into Austria, then over the next boarder into Switzerland. We traveled through Chur, the oldest city of Switzerland. Once we reached Tiefencastel we all boarded the Bernina Railway train, the first electric driven tourist railway train that goes over the Alps to Tirani in Italy. It was the smoothest train ride ever. The views from the train were spectacular and reminded me a lot of Banff and Jasper in Alberta. At the end of the train ride we had reached St. Moritz, Switzerland, where we had 1 1/2 hours to shop (power shop in my case) or go for lunch. St. Moritz, Switzerland is a lovely place but very expensive. This town is where the rich come to ski in the winter, shop, bank and many have homes. Following this we meet our guide and our Bus back at the train station. He took us to a gorgeous viewpoint of the white glaciers like Piz Palu, 3904 meters, Piz Bernina, 4049 meters and Piz Morteratsch, 3750 meters. From there we continued our journey through the national park Engadin-Ofenpass to the Fluelpass, which is 2383 meters high, and to the spa town Davos with the healthy climate for a coffee or hot chocolate break. Our home journey went through Klosters - Prattigau - Rhine Valley and back to Allgau (our stop Oberstafen). This was 12 hours well spent.
Tidbit: #1. Switzerland has an unemployment rate of only 3 percent which is very low.
Tidbit: #2. When traveling in Europe be sure to always have change with you as the toilets are often not free of charge to use.
Tidbit: #3. If you drive here or ever decide to live here, buy a small car. It's the only way to get around and find a parking space easier. We found Smart Cars in every city. Love the orange one in the photo below.
It is now 7:30 am on Friday morning June 21st. I am sitting here sipping on my cup of tea, eating my daily delivered freshly homemade bread and vanilla/chocolate sweet buns from a local bakery, while looking outside the big open window from our dining room table looking at the most majestic view, while listening to the beautiful singing of the many birds here and listening to the cow bells clang in the background as the cows walk around the fields grazing and having their breakfast. It's true, German bread is a heavier bread, delicious and filling. Yup, gonna be hard to leave tomorrow. Our stay here has sadly come to an end. Time to start packing our bags. Sorry to say it, but this will be my last blog for awhile. Hope you have enjoyed following me through Europe. Take care. Ciao...Tori
